COVID-19: An Unprecedented Mobilization of the Scientific Community
On Thursday, 26 February 2020, Thomas Cueni spoke to Suisse media (RTS La Matinale).
He explains how the innovative biopharmaceutical member companies of IFPMA are already helping and are taking practical steps to engage. Those companies with potentially relevant knowhow have teams of scientists checking their libraries of potential assets that could fight coronaviruses. Our priority as the biopharmaceutical industry is to help develop countermeasures, be it vaccines, therapies, or diagnostics, and if and when successful, make them immediately available to those in need.
The rapid sharing of the virus genome across the scientific community has allowed researchers to characterize and begin to understand the new threat posed by COVID-19. Thanks to the WHO’s structures (The Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data/ GISAID which is partly financed by the biopharmaceutical industry), which have been in place for years to allow sharing of seasonal flu strains, it was possible to share the first COVID19 genome sequences quickly among scientists as well as public health authorities.

Il explique comment, face au COVID-19, les entreprises biopharmaceutiques innovantes membres de l’IFPMA ont rapidement mobilisé leurs chercheurs afin de vérifier si elles disposent de principes actifs susceptibles d’être efficaces contre les coronavirus. Notre priorité est d’aider à développer vaccins, traitements ou diagnostics, et de les rendre immédiatement disponibles pour protéger et soigner les populations.
Le partage rapide du génome du virus au sein de la communauté scientifique a permis aux chercheurs d’identifier la séquence du génome du nouveau coronavirus. Grâce aux structures de l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (The Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data/ GISAID qui est en partie financée par l’industrie biopharmaceutique), qui sont en place depuis des années pour permettre le partage des souches de grippe saisonnière, il a été possible de partager rapidement les premières séquences du génome de COVID-19 avec les scientifiques et les autorités de santé publique.
