On the margins of the WIPO General Assembly, HYPER, WIPO, and IFPMA organized an interactive live mentorship session on the future of innovation and intellectual property in the life sciences sector.
With participants from the private sector, research and academic institutions, and youth, the event explored the skill sets required to face global challenges of today and of the future. Attendees gained insights into how sophisticated IP frameworks and strategies can catalyze and safeguard the entrepreneurial journey of young innovators, while supporting progress on Sustainable Development Goals.

Syed Saader Ahmed co-founded Techinvention Lifecare Pvt Ltd, India. With his equally passionate colleagues and team, he works toward Infrastructure and capacity building of Medical Counter Measures encompassing: Diagnostics, Vaccine & Novel Biotherapeutics. (LMIC focus). He is a Board Member and also serves as the Vice President of Emerging Biopharmaceutical Manufacturers Network, a non-profit Association of 10 leading biopharmaceutical manufacturers from emerging markets.
Syed Saader Ahmed features as co-inventor in over 15 patents filed in the field of vaccines, diagnostics and novel biotherapeutics. He also features as corresponding author in more than 15 scientific abstracts that have got accepted for presentation in the most reputed of global scientific conferences.
Syed Saader Ahmed Frequently features in the list of eminent speakers invited to speak at Global forums/events on the subject of ‘Vaccines & Novel Biologics Manufacturing capacity building.
Awa Babington-Ashaye is a biochemist specialized in virology and molecular biochemistry. She has an extensive experience in public health and also in the treatment development for various therapeutic areas such as respiratory (COPD, Asthma, Allergy).
She led several public health initiatives related to the prevention and diagnosis of various infectious disease (Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya) and also malaria in different regions of the world and in West-Africa in particular. Her activities include the implementation and management of disease awareness programmes on chronic diseases (diabetes) and infectious diseases as well as the design of educational programmes for patients.
She is also the Head of Initiatives and Partnerships for Health of a Swiss-based NGO, United People Global, which joined global efforts to limit the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 by supporting local communities through knowledge dissemination and prevention and by helping other organisations to take positive action.
Her research focuses on the design, the development of E-health solutions for chronic diseases and health communication. She is particularly interested in the implementation and evaluation of digital solutions and patient-reported outcomes measurements tools that can participate in improving the Quality of Life of patients in low resource countries.
She is a PhD candidate in Public Health and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Geneva. She is also a visiting professor in Strategy & Health Communications at the Grenoble Management academic School of Management and she provides training for private sector companies in strategic marketing and communications for the health sector.
Josefa Cortés obtained a worldwide patent for her product and was recognized as one of the 100 young leaders of Chile. In 2021, Palpa reached over 20,000 women and formed partnerships with over 50 companies. In 2022, Josefa was honored with the Chile Design Award, the most prestigious award given by the design guild. That same year, she was recognized by MIT as one of the 35 most innovative young people in Latin America. At the age of 26, she was acknowledged as one of the 100 women leaders of Chile and Palpa was considered one of the top 100 startups in Chile by Forbes.
James Davies is a patent attorney with an electronic and computer background, with a genuine interest in these things, and all things technological. James works in the patent department, mainly assisting local clients in filing and prosecution of patent and design applications in South Africa and indeed all over the world.
James’s technical qualification is electronic engineering (from the University of Pretoria) and he focuses on the somewhat nebulous area of software-implemented inventions, but routinely deals with electrical and mechanical inventions and industrial designs. James also excels at patent searching, whether novelty searches prior to filing patent applications, validity searches after filing, or freedom-to-operate searches to safeguard commercial implementation.
James is focused on improving systems and processes internally within Adams & Adams, having active involvement in the IT committee and also being involved with, and advising on, the implementation of the South African Patent Office’s e-filing service for patent and design applications.

Marion “Amy” Dietterich is the Director of the Global Challenges Division at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In this role, she covers Intellectual Property (IP)-related global policy issues in the areas of Global Health.
Amy has 20 years of experience in the fields of public health, water & sanitation, and governance, spanning community-based organizations, international NGOs, global health partnerships, and United Nations institutions. Prior to joining WIPO in 2018, she worked with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to ensure stronger community engagement in health systems governance and service delivery, and with the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF to support parliamentary oversight of development cooperation and financing.
Ms. Dietterich earned her academic qualifications in Epidemiology, Biology, and French from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Bucknell University in 2005 and 2000 respectively.
Edward Kwakwa is Assistant Director General, Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. He served as General Counsel at WIPO from 2004 until September 2016.
Kwakwa holds an LL.B. degree from the University of Ghana, an LL.M. from Queen’s University in Canada, and an LL.M. and a J.S.D. from Yale Law School in the U.S.A.
Before joining WIPO, Kwakwa practiced with the law firm of O’Melveny and Myers in Washington, D.C., worked as International Legal Adviser at the Commission on Global Governance in Geneva, as Senior Legal Adviser at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and as Legal Affairs Officer at the World Trade
Organization (WTO).
Elise Melon is a pharmaceutical policy expert, with an emphasis on intellectual property and innovation policies, particularly at EU level.
Elise Melon joined UCB in 2017 – a global biopharmaceutical company focusing on creating valuable solutions that improve the lives of people living with neurological and autoimmune conditions now and into the future.
As Head of IP Policy and Operations, she managed a team of IP paralegals and several IP operations and policy specialists to build this practice. In 2022, she took on a broader role in the Legal Department as Head Legal Operations and Public Policy, coordinating strategic planning, transversal legal operations and public policy activities across the company.
Before joining UCB, Elise Melon worked for 5 years at the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), which represents the research-based and innovative pharmaceutical industry in the EU. As Director for Intellectual Property Policy, she coordinated the development of EFPIA’s IP and innovation policy within and outside the EU.
She is chairing EFPIA’s IP Expert Group, and is an active contributor to many other working groups in various national and international trade associations.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political sciences and European Studies from Sciences Po Paris and two Masters of Law in Intellectual Property Law from Sciences Po Paris and in European Law and Economic Analysis from the College of Europe (Bruges).
Dr. Moses Ochora is a Paediatrician working at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He is a clinician, researcher and lover of cutting-edge medical technologies. Moses is Co-founder and CEO of Photokabada Limited, a company dedicated to developing a phototherapy device able to treat at least three babies simultaneously with remote monitoring. This unique device combines advanced technology with unparalleled convenience to provide optimal treatment for multiple babies simultaneously. The device provides a 360-degree irradiation system, making it 40% more efficient than conventional devices. Arthur Queval is the inventor of Loop Medical’s blood collection technology and the initiator of the project. He is the inventor or co-inventor of more than 40 international patents.
Arthur holds a Master’s degree in microengineering, with a specialization in bioengineering, from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) and McGill University in Montreal. After graduation, Arthur was Innovation Project Manager for Swatch Group Ltd where he led the implementation and industrialization of new technologies.
Entrepreneur at heart, he founded Qloudlab SA in 2012, a Point-of-Care diagnostic platform, raising 1.5mCHF in private funding and attracted attention from leading In-Vitro Diagnostics companies.
Arthur also co-founded Cuboyo, a website library of 3D models dedicated to the growing 3D printing community.
Dr. Brighton Samatanga is the Founder and CEO of The Biotech Institute, a molecular research and development firm focused on life sciences innovation and training in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, including areas such as personalized cancer genomics, microbiome profiling and medical health informatics. The institution collaborates closely with the Pan African Treatment Access Movement (PATAM), African Biogenomics Project (ABP), Centre for Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Research Zimbabwe (CeSHHAR), among others.
Dr. Samatanga is an internationally acclaimed scientist previously featured in NATURE Magazine and other media. He is a former Full Professor for Soft Matter Physics in Germany, and holds a PhD in biophysics from the ETH Zurich, as well as an Executive MBA from the USA, among other degrees. He is also Founder of the Swiss-based Health Innovation Africa Foundation, which has a current focus on women’s health, among other issues.

Dr. Samatanga is also a Senior Partner and Leadership Consultant at a reknown Swiss management Consulting firm, and is a strong advocate for strong leadership and mentorship programs.
